Womxn Develop at Ubisoft: Game Design Challenge Finalist

I participated in the Womxn Develop at Ubisoft competition from October to December 2020, becoming one of the top 4 finalists in the game design challenge. The task involved creating a pitch document to outline the player experience and constructing a prototype plan for a new operator design for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.

My pitch presentation was originally presented with voice recording to explain each slide, as it was not possible to present in-person due to COVID-19.

My Defender operator, Whistle, offers a straightforward gadget for intel gathering by audibly notifying the team, visually pinging enemy locations, and providing a new distraction for Attackers needing to find and destroy or escape the radius of detection. Whistle has balanced statistics and options in her loadout are suitable for any playstyle. I included some annotated maps in my design with possible gameplay situations.

For this challenge, I aimed to design an operator that is versatile and accessible to mute players and players without a premade team.  I also hoped to draw inspiration from currently successful operators, by developing an effective alternative or counter with an interesting new approach.

I did not have formal experience in game design specifically prior to this competition since I was just enrolled in the course at the time and did not have any external help or advice. However, I applied skills from my HCI and psychology courses in addition to my own personal gaming experience. As someone who has not played Rainbow Six Siege prior to this challenge, there was a steep learning curve in researching the game and understanding the player base. By analyzing the perspectives of professional and amateur players alike, I aspire to design for the players and diversify my skills as a game designer for a variety of genres.

Below is my design goals presentation, for which I was selected as a top 10 finalist.
