This weekend, I participated in the Code/Design to Win competition finals held at the Communitech Hub in Waterloo Region. There are two distinct parts to the competition as the name suggests: coders and designers. 25 designers and 50 coders were selected from the thousands of students across Canada that completed the preliminary challenge in Fall 2018. The design component primarily involved aspects of user interface and mobile application design.
On the two-day trip in Waterloo, we were invited to visit various technological companies (like Google) and attend talks led by industry professionals. It was also an excellent opportunity to make connections with other like-minded people in more casual social events (with free food!).
The design competition format was like a design sprint. We had a limited amount of time to familiarize with the situation given to us, identify pain points, and propose a design solution communicated in the form of three mobile application screens and one page of notes. Although I ultimately did not win the $5,000 prize, it was a wonderful experience and opportunity to learn as a designer.
